We all love a good book. We all love a good film. But we all hate a bad adaptation. This year, major releases such as Brighton Rock and The Rum Diary (not to mention the final episode of the Harry Potter series), are due to attract big numbers in the box office. But with a plethora of books flying from the shelf to our cinema screens, what makes a good adaptation?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I will be screened in glorious 2D. Thank God for that.

It seems that Rachel Weisz is sick of being known as the beautiful and determined pursuer of good. Be grateful, Rachel, worse things happen at sea! But rather then play an evil witch, perhaps in the upcoming Harry Potter film, she’s gone for a sexy number. Well, I guess the fat and ugly characters can wait. You gotta grab the spicey roles whilst you’ve still got your metabolism and your own teeth.

Warner Brothers have revealed the point at which the first half of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will end. Warning: spoilers!

Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief juxtaposes the battle of the Gods on Mount Olympus and the exploits of a teenage boy destined for greatness, based on the first of five books by Rick Riordan. Echoes of Harry Potter are uncomfortably palpable, but Percy at least offers significantly more laughs than the first outing of the earnest Brit wizard.

Now that he’s hung up his pointy hat, wand and pained-yet-heroic expression for good, we’re all wondering what Daniel Radcliffe will do next. He’s finished filming the seven book/eight film epic that is Harry Potter, and hasn’t wasted much time in selecting a new role. He’s announced that he will be starring in a remake of the 1930s WW1 epic All Quiet On The Western Front.

Crimety, it seems the team of The Hobbit are taking a lot of inspiration from LOTR – the only thing missing from this endles production quest is a tromp around Mordor. With various stoppings, stallings, funding problems and director drop-outs, we’re beginning to wonder whether The Hobbit will ever get made. And the most recent rumour? That David Yates – director of the last four Harry Potter films – will step up to helm it.

It seems that the letters ‘3D’ have taken on serious money-making significance for film-makers everywhere. Warner Bros has announced that their next few films – including Green Lantern, Sucker Punch, Clash Of The Titans and Harry Potter – will all be given the 3D treatment.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. A young boy discovers that he is the offspring of powerful parents (they always are) and a greater destiny awaits him (it always does). So he travels to be trained in the ways of the hero and then confronts much stronger and deadlier foes than any young boy should and emerges victorious (in no small part two his two companions a clever yet vulnerable girl and a cowardly yet loyal boy. No we’re not talking about Harry Potter and the One With the Spells, we are talking about Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief
