Do you know what the world doesn’t have enough of? Passionate love letters to eleven-year-old sci-fi films, that’s what! Long-term BFFer Harry Harris sent us this blog at half one in the morning, which probably means he wrote it drunk – still, when you’re talking about the finest film to ever star Tom Cruise and some futuristic mittens there’s no other way to work. We present his very personal tribute to Minority Report.
With Jack Reacher hitting cinemas this Winter, it’s only right we honor the crazy stunt-monster himself. Say what you like about his personal life, but Tom Cruise is undeniably a fantastic screen presence. Whether you’re watching him mixing drinks (Cocktail) or drinking drinks (The Last Samurai) or demanding drinks (Tropic Thunder) or getting his eyeballs removed (Minority Report), there’s a jolly good reason for everyone to toast our favourite psychopath!
We really need to start pre-empting these robot-apocalypse issues at the design stage.
Who knew that sci-fi films were allowed to be set outside New York City? Every timeworn trope of the ‘alien invasion’ genre beloved of Cold War screenwriters has hurdled the Iron Curtain and descended on Moscow for The Darkest Hour, a virtually irredeemable mess of contrived clichés, crap CGI and Cyrillic cignage. And some things that don’t begin with C (as well as some others that do which we can’t mention here – looking at you, Bekmambetov).
It’s Christmas time. Sure, it’s the 31st, but TECHNICALLY we’re all still firmly in the 12 Days Of Christmas spirit of things. And you know what happens at Christmas? Miracles. To celebrate all things miraculous, Best For Film will be looking into one of the most awesome of all phenomena; life that imitates film. Here are the Top 10 Film Plots That Came True…
Since the dawn of cinema, it has become the standard for any successful novel to make the transition from text to film. This is something that many purists distain saying that it taints the original and eventually make it obsolete (despite the fact that a successful movie will, in almost all cases, raise sales on the original novel). Literary critique aside it has to be said that some of the best movies ever made are adaptations of novels, and as such we have compiled a top ten list of the best adaptations from Sci-Fi/ Fantasy literature to film.
Do you have a favourite actor? How about a least favourite? In our semi-regular J’Accuse feature, two of Best For Film’s most opinionated writers go head to head in a no-holds-barred tussle over an actor or film which one thinks is super and the other reckons to be shite. This week: everyone’s favourite couch-jumping superstar, Tom Cruise!
New York magazine reports a Planet of the Apes reboot is in the works at Fox. The current incarnation, titled Caesar, is a reworking of the fourth film in the original series, which details how the ape uprising came about.
