Here’s another one to add to the already overly saturated real-life Italian-gangster film pile we have festering in the corner. Angels of Evil is a biopic about Renato Vallanzasca; the legendary thief, kidnapper, gangster and fugitive from justice whose name still haunts the streets of Milan. Judging by director Michele Placido’s past work on the brilliant Romanzo Criminale, we assumed that this was going to be a doozy of a gangster flick. Instead we left the cinema a little deflated.
Whatever Happened to Pete Blaggit? is a sci-fi comedy about weddings, zombies and rape – and, should another film ever slot into that very specific sub-sub-subgenre, we guarantee it will be better than this incoherent and nonsensical tripe.
From the 15th-26th June, the Edinburgh Film Festival will return for its 65th year. Endeavouring to reinvent itself for the 2011 ceremony in spite of recent budget cuts, a slew of cinematic events and a strong selection of shorts, feature films and documentaries stand this year’s festival in good stead to be the best yet.
