Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry – together at last! A most original cinematic odd couple whose Green Hornet manages to absorb elements of the best of both; the pair combine trademark Rogen gagsmithery and Gondry mind-bending visuals to breathe life into a threadbare tale and bring verve and invention to a genre creaking under the sheer weight of its own offerings.

One expects this film’s curious title to be a weak pun on the surnames of the lead characters. One would be wrong. The name, ‘Knight,’ is tenuously linked to Cruise’s character but other than that there is no explanation for it. This lazy and incomprehensible title becomes rather apt for a film which does not require you to leave your brains at the door but rather put them in a lead lined box from which there is no escape.

“Abandon all hope ye who enter here”. Such reads the sign that confronts Queen Lillian and King Harold as they approach the unfriendly terrain of Rumpelstiltskin’s land in the opening scene of Shrek Forever After. 93 minutes later and you are left wondering who the words were really directed at. Beneath the fireworks of what has been celebrated as the the final chapter of a universally adored franchise lies an apology for an exit that is more dogged than triumphant.

…well, dollars at least. It has been announced today that the 19-year-old Harry Potter starlett has this year earned $19 million, making her the highest paid actress of 2009. She beat out the likes of Cameron Diaz and Angelina Jolie, as well as being the youngest person on Varietys best paid list at number 14.

You know what you’re in for when you pick up Pineapple Express at the DVD store. It’s a typically zany outing featuring Seth Rogen in his usual sarcastic misfit role, but the boy does it well – this time he’s on the run with his pot dealer after the two accidentally witness a drug ring murder. Sounds serious, but don’t worry, it’s actually far from it – Rogen pushes the boundaries of the ridiculous to extreme degrees in his chuckleworthy screenplay.

It’s been a long time coming for this first of Jodi Picoult’s bestselling tear-jerkers to make it to the big screen. The slightly odd casting of Cameron Diaz in a serious drama role leaves a little to be desired, but her younger counterparts shine with charming vulnerability and maturity. Overall, it’s a well-adapted modern ethical tale that will have you blubbering like an idiot ten minutes in.

Paramount have released the first trailer for Shrek 4 – Shrek Forever After which is (hopefully) the final instalment of the Ogre’s adventures.
