  • Royal Observatory Greenwich Sci-Fi Season

In a frankly inspired bit of outreach work, the Royal Observatory Greenwich is planning to punctuate this summer with a series of classic sci-fi screenings accompanied by talks from REAL SCIENTISTS. Like, alien experts and that. Seriously, when did you last hear an idea this good (apart from Best For Film Presents…, that is)? We’ll be hitting this week’s screening of War of the Worlds, and we’ll expect to see you there.

  • Friday Drinking Game #79 – Alien Invasions

It’s TGIF, people! And as such, we at BFF have devised another cunning way for you to get off-your-rocker-hammered with a Friday Drinking Game that is devoted whole heartedly to our alien neighbors. Not the mind-your-business-and-we’ll-mind-ours variety but the kind that has a bit of a hard-on for invasion. Seems fitting really, seeing as both The Host and Dark Skies are now on show at a cinema near you.

  • Race 2

The sequel to the 2008 hit Race, Race 2 encompasses enough action, gorgeous humans (hiiiii John Abraham) and complicated plots to work as a stand-alone action thriller. There’s no denying that Bollywood films ever EVER lack vivid colours, great cinematography and music that’ll make your head burst (with what, I’m unsure). But it’s thin dialogue, awfully superficial characters and chimerical plot let the film down abysmally. Race 2 really attempts to be a great success, and manages it sometimes, but its triple-twists and quadruple-bluffs turn into one (addictively) outrageous farce.

  • Cheat Sheet: Dakota Fanning

This week saw the release of emotional drama Now Is Good, a film adaptation of the popular novel Before I Die, starring Dakota Fanning as a terminal cancer sufferer hellbent on enjoying the life she has left. In honour of the release, we delve beneath the alabaster skin and bright blue eyes to bring you everything you ever wanted to know about the child star turned poised young woman.

  • Top Ten Sci-Fi Adaptations

Since the dawn of cinema, it has become the standard for any successful novel to make the transition from text to film. This is something that many purists distain saying that it taints the original and eventually make it obsolete (despite the fact that a successful movie will, in almost all cases, raise sales on the original novel). Literary critique aside it has to be said that some of the best movies ever made are adaptations of novels, and as such we have compiled a top ten list of the best adaptations from Sci-Fi/ Fantasy literature to film.

  • Top 15 Money shots of the Noughties

There was all kinds of debate about what to call this blog. In the end we decided to keep the name Money shots, if you were expecting something else from a film website then perhaps we could satisfy you (urgh) with this blog on the top 15 visually stunning moments in film from 2000 – 2009.

  • Top 10 Deus Ex Machina moments

Whether deliciously farcical or born of plain old screenwriting sloth, the deus ex machina tends to provoke fairly spectacular reactions – after all, there’s scarcely a single worthwhile moment in cinema which doesn’t derive from GREEK MEN FLYING THROUGH THE AIR ON CRANES. We’ve scraped together the best of the worst…

  • Skyline

Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem directors return with SFX-soaked alien invasion tale. Not only the worst film of the year, this is possibly one of the worst films to have ever hit cinemas. The actors seem to sleepwalk through a script that is not worth the beermat it’s scribbled on, and even the admittedly spectacular effects cannot save this shockingly derivative film from the tasteless direction of its creators.
