It’s not easy being a displaced child, less still being the parent of one. Don’t believe me? Then watching this film should be all the proof you need.
A documentary focused around two young men charged with terrorism offences in the midst of the 2008 Republican National Convention, Better This World uses a combination of thoroughly gathered interviews and written record to provide a startling look at America’s escalated approach to internal security. Gripping viewing.
One of the most expensive films about an Arabian subject matter ever funded by an Arab, there’s no doubt that Black Gold is a labour of love from producer Tarak Ben Ammar. Adapted from Hans Reusch’s 1957 novel South of the Heart and uniting a strong international cast, the film strives for epic, but instead comes off as kitsch – a fine mixture of ingredients, disappointingly over baked in the fiery desert sun.
Bill Cunningham is one of fashion’s most prolific photographers. Surprisingly, he’s unpretentious, doesn’t dress in high fashion and lives in a small room full of filing cabinets. Weren’t expecting that were you?
Two Years at Sea, the latest art piece from Ben Rivers, follows the daily habits of the reclusive Jake Williams. As one of the last remaining wild-men, Jake’s story is inspiring, uplifting and needlessly dull.
War, Pestilence, Famine and Death – the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are coming and we’re all going to die, unless you watch this film.
Taylor Kitsch bounces around a not-so-distant planet as one of the most ordinarily-named sci-fi heroes ever. It’s a fun film, but it probably would’ve done better on its opening weekend with a more revealing title, like ‘The Martian Messiah,’ or something.
Eric Cantona gets top billing in this new French thriller, but it’s lead actress Karine Vanasse who steals the show, out-acting everyone to the point that it gets a bit embarrassing. If you like your movies full of insane plot-twists, shady mothers and lots of running then Switch is probably for you. On the other hand, if you’re a fan of films that essentially make sense you might want to look elsewhere.
Argh! Climate change, we’re all gonna die! Well, actually some people in the Maldives might. Sorry to make it all gloomy but if, like me, you thought that climate change was just another thing happening in the world, then you should watch this; an insightful documentary about a man determined not to give in to the potential catastrophes of global warming.
With the last days of Edgar Allen Poe proving an enduring mystery, James McTeigue poses an account of the poet’s final days that sees him investigating a spate of murders based on his previous works. Drawing a mixed response from critics, we can at least rest assured that it couldn’t possibly be any worse than his 2009 effort, Ninja Assassin. Right? RIGHT?
