  • Star Trek Into Darkness

    J.J. Abrams’ vision of the classic space-faring franchise continues to dominate the increasingly-crowded sci-fi genre. After the successful reboot in 2009, the tricky follow-up of Star Trek Into Darkness had a lot to live up to; not only its predecessor, but the much beloved original series. It’s the loudest, fastest, shiniest, most slick, most beautiful and yes, most entertaining Star Trek to date, but this does come at a cost of the introspection and consideration that was previously associated with the series. That being said, Star Trek Into Darkness is a brilliant blockbuster – just expect it to be closer to Transformers than to Wrath of Khan.


  • Iron Man 3

    All hail Shane Black, the genius behind the latest Iron Man film. Bursting with humour, crammed with more twists than a bag of fusilli and built around a plot that actually – I’ll be damned! – holds together under scrutiny, Iron Man 3 is far and away the best of the series, and certainly the funniest offering from Marvel so far. That’s right, folks. Tony Stark is back and he’s better than ever.








  • Flight

    After United 93, Snakes on a Plane, Red Eye and Final Destination, I thought I’d survived the worst airplane disaster movies (despite my fear of flying). That was until Flight came along, loosely based on Alaska Airlines Flight 261, which crashed in the year 2000 killing 89 people, and inspired a whole new level of plane-related fear. Plunging the viewer into the ground at a few hundred miles per hour should be enough to raise the heart rate, but it is Denzel Washington’s story of alcohol addiction that is the most powerful.
