What with Toby Jones playing Alfred Hitchcock in a new TV drama, there’s only question on everyone’s minds: who wins Best Hitchcock Impersonator, Toby Jones or Anthony Hopkins? The new biopic of the ‘Master of Suspense’ is certainly stylish, but lacks plausibility as it introduces a fictitious storyline between Hitchcock’s wife and Whitfield Cook. That being said, it’s entertaining and breathes new life into Alma Reville, ‘the woman behind the man’.
Today, the news broke that Susan Boyle – aka SuBo, the nation’s SWEETHEART – has signed away the rights to her life. Meaning, in other words, that next year some dreadful people with clipboards and cameras and booms are going to start filming a proper movie that’s all about her. While this isn’t the first adaptation of Hergé’s comic book creation to grace the big screen, it is the first time that Tintin has appeared since 1972 and the first time he ‘s been presented to such a general audience. With Steven Spielberg on top form, and a story which picks liberally from three of the series’ most popular books, the result is quite simply one of the best blistering blue blockbusters of the year.
Half drowned from the deluge of rave reviews (and probably lagoon) with which it was met in Venice, Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of John Le Carré’s classic Cold War thriller will shortly open in Britain. Don’t miss it. As engaging an adaptation of the labyrinthine novel as was the classic BBC series starring Alec Guinness, this is the very definition of a masterful translation to the screen.
