The annual BFI London film festival has arrived to cheer away the doom and gloom of the coming months. Giving Londoners the opportunity to get a look at films they might not ordinarily get the chance to appreciate, the festival has an array of unique and exciting features on offer. We know we say this every week, but this is one experience you really will not want to miss.

Everyone’s favourite stealth Irishman is back, shooting even more disenfranchised Albanians in the statistically inevitable Taken 2. But why would you subject yourself to any of Liam Neeson’s new films (except The Grey) without a really massive drink? Well, now you don’t need to! CAUTION: do not attempt to ski after playing this drinking game.

Another week, another favourite film, another bloodthirsty alien rampaging through an Antarctic research site. Wait, what? Alex Mullane is armed with a flamethrower, a bit of wire and a bloody great beard, and he’s here to defend the both impeccable taste of the BFF crew and his favourite film – John Carpenter’s The Thing. Obviously, spoilers will abound.

Film is undoubtedly the art form that speaks to us the most here at Best For Film but there is one other that surpasses it. Music. Music is awesome. The right song can take your mood from FML to LMAO. The right song can mend your broken heart. The right music can cure a terminal disease. Ok, that last part was a little much but you get the drift. So, you can imagine how excited we get when music and film become one. Here follows a list of our favourite uses of music in film.

Starring alongside Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the newly released Looper, Emily Blunt’s career trajectory has been on a steep incline for some time now. After just six months drama training, Blunt made her theatrical debut alongside the legendary Dame Judi Dench and was dubbed “the most talented actress I’ve ever worked with,” by none other than Meryl Streep. While the London Film Festival is getting under-way elsewhere in the capital, there’s a much more intimate celebration of film occurring elsewhere. Hidden away in the depths of East London is the 3 Mills film studio, which has become something of a home-from-home for stop-motion animation, and has attracted its share of big live action film-makers too, in recent years. They’re hosting a four-day event to celebrate their output.

Everyone loves a time-travel movie. Everyone. It’s the ultimate dream; to be able to flit back through time and tell your younger self to stop after the sixth Jägerbomb; to flit forward in time and find out the lottery numbers; to visit the dinosaurs (ill-advised) or our inevitably dystopian future (iller-advised). Of course, it’s all fantasy, and the fact that it’s impossible causes all sorts of consternation among nerds, who try and puzzle the various internal logics of such films until the wee small hours. Time-travel movies are great; but they’re also bloody confusing.

Our shamelessly self-indulgent feature BFFFF continues with Kayleigh Dray, Best For Film’s most prolific contributor and the only person we’ve ever met who can narrowly avoid a mugging, injure herself pole-dancing and have someone start photographing her on a train in the same afternoon. Kayleigh’s singing the praises of 90s Star Trek spoof Galaxy Quest, but will her arguments convince you?

The UK might be in the midst of taking a severe battering from Mother Nature (after all we do for her?), but in the world of Best For Film, we don’t let that dampen our spirits. What better excuse to take a trip to the cinema than to avoid the pissing rain? And on that note…
